TRUMPETER SWAN (Cygnus buccinator)

This is one of the largest flying birds. It is similar to the Whistling Swan, but larger. It has a loud musical honking call. Once on the verge of extension but now widespread in W North America. The swans in these photographs migrate here to Magnus Lake near Heber Springs, Arkansas to spend the winter. This year (2006-07) there were 137 of these magnifcient birds that came here from some of the states much further North. Just two years ago the lake and surrounding area were made into a wildlife preserve to help protect these beautifull swans.
