EASTERN HOGNOSE SNAKE (Heterodon platyrhinos)

This is a stout-bodied snake with a pointed, slightly upturned snout and a wide neck. Variable coloring usually yellowish, tan, brown, gray or reddish, with rectangular dark blotches on the back interspersed with round dark blotches. Feeds mostly on ampbhibians. The female lays up to 60 thin-shelled eggs. Widespread MN to southern NH, S to FL, W to TX and KS.

This snake is small and usually gray, yellowish-brown, brown, or reddish brown. Paler belly with small black spots along the sides. The young have a yellowish collar. They feed mostly on earthworns, slugs, and snails. Found in moist woodland, marshes, and margins of swamps, bogs, and ponds; vacant lots, as well as garden, parks, cemeteries. Widespread.
